ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - On Thursday, a group of MNAs affiliated with the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a multi-party alliance, filed a reference with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking to disqualify former Prime Minister Imran Khan from holding public office for allegedly receiving prohibited funding from several foreign donors.
MNA Barrister Mohsin Ranjha submitted the reference to Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, along with the signatures of lawmakers Agha Hassan Baloch, Salahudeen Ayubi, Ali Gohar Khan, Syed Rafiullah Agha, and Saad Waseem Sheikh.
The election watchdog ruled on Tuesday that the PTI had "wilfully" and "knowingly" received prohibited funding from a number of foreign donors. The commission also stated in its order that it was "constrained to hold that Imran Khan failed to discharge his obligations as mandated by Pakistani statutes."
Soon after the ECP's decision in the case, the ruling coalition began calling for the PTI chief's disqualification and strict legal action.
PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman urged the government on Tuesday to "make an example" of Imran Khan.
